S2: Mechanics of composites: Experiments and models

Soraia Pimenta (Imperial College, UK) soraia.pimenta@imperial.ac.uk
Claudio Lopes (IMDEA-Materials Institute, Spain) claudiosaul.lopes@imdea.org

This symposium will be a meeting point where research students, engineers, and scientists working on all aspects of the mechanics of composite materials and structures will share and discuss their ideas. High-quality contributions are welcome in the areas of characterization and testing, design & optimization, and modelling of advanced composites. The symposium aims to cover a broad range of topics related to research in mechanics of composites including (but not limited to):

  • Characterization of constituents, plies, and interfaces.
  • Strength, fracture, damage tolerance, and energy absorption.
  • Design and optimization for stiffness, buckling, strength, and damage tolerance.
  • Multiscale modelling and simulation.

  • Additionally, the symposium is opened to contributions related to structural applications of composite materials in the aeronautical, automotive, marine, energy harvesting, sporting, and biomedical sectors. Finally, participation is encouraged in research areas related to conventional composites, as well as novel non-conventional design architectures enabled by recent available production technologies (e.g. tow-spreading, advanced fibre placement, additive manufacturing).
